Refugees Are Welcome In York

A large number of pro-refugee supporters, gathered at the Railway Workers War Memorial in Station Rise, York, last Saturday afternoon at 1pm. The protest was instigated to counter the impact which a group of racists expected to have in organising a “Refugees Not Welcome Here” protest.

A silent candle-lit vigil was later held in Exhibition Square at 4.30pm and attracted a large number of people, including many of those who had attended the earlier protest.

After the horror of the Paris attacks we must not allow an Islamaphobic backlash to divide us. Many of the refugees are fleeing from similar atrocities and we need to make it clear that they are welcome here.
