In Edinburgh, as everywhere else, there are people across all communities who desperately need to signal their horror, their grief and their sadness at the sheer uncomprehendable devastation visited on Gaza in recent weeks.

Here they line the central reservation of Scotland’s capital as the opening weekend of the world’s biggest arts festival swirls around them, to bear witness to their feelings.
